Six reasons why most home based businesses fail

John Carlton’s Plodding Dinosaur Test

Manage money for better business
We are launched!

Dinosaur

"Testing" is a dirty word to some people. And it shouldn’t be. It’s not hard to do, when you know the game.

And what you learn - once you get the knack of passing all data through your Inner Salesman -- will be like adding jet fuel to your business.

Remember: "It’s a mess to guess." Most business owners (and nearly all ad agencies) hate to bother with testing. They want to sit around and think really hard... come up with a brilliant solution or marketing scheme (preferably one that is "out of the box")... and then run with it.

     Dumb, dumb, dumb.

For most people... including most business owners... their Inner Salesman is fast asleep. And flabby. Consider him a muscle that needs a good workout to get strong. And to get really strong, he needs special exercises and extra nutrition.

Most of the questions (and ALL of the panicked emergencies) I get about marketing on the Web are a direct result of not having a salesman’s savvy. The poor guy’s snoring.

Here’s a sample of recent emails: "How do I know what to charge for my product online? Should I price it at $49? Or $39?" "I’m not sure which pitch will work to my list. Should I be really aggressive, or should I act like a super-enlightened dude who doesn’t have to try very hard?"

     And my favorite...

"How Will I Know If What I’m Doing Is Working?"

     Big sigh from my end.

Look, guys, it’s really very simple. Working the Web isn’t all that much different from working direct mail lists. You DON’T "know" how to price your product - you find out. You don’t "know" which kind of pitch will work - you find out.

And you don’t "know" when you stuff is working (or not). You find out.

So how do you land on a price? Well, if you have competition, see what they charge, and what they deliver for that price. Then, position yourself either higher, or lower, or exactly the same. And explain why you’re priced that way.

Here’s what I have discovered about pricing. First, there is no difference at all between, say $49 and $39. There are "price cut-off points" in most people’s minds. In most cases, people won’t distinguish between $49 and $39 or $41, or $35, or $43 or anything else below $49.

No. There seems to be a range there - anything above $20 and below $50 (if you adequately sell it) should be at least tested at $49. In the customer’s mind, it’s a hazy price range. If they will spend $39 for it, they will often just as quickly spend $49 for it. But they absolutely will not buy at a flat $50. For most people, $50 bucks can be "too much"... while $49 is just fine. (This works all the way down the line. Don’t price yourself at even numbers. Go down, even a penny, and take advantage of the unconscious discount. Thus it’s never $20, but $19.95. It’s $99, not $100. And it’s $1,499, not $1,500.)

So don’t cheat yourself by coming up with dumb price points.

This ain’t an exact science. That’s why we test. I’ve had clients who sold stuff at $35 a pop... who could not tell me why they had settled on that price. It just "seemed" like a good number at the time.

So I told them to test a much higher price... and they were astonished to learn that a good percentage of their customer base would happily shell out $99 and more for the same stuff.

And with the right kind of pitch, and by adding more value in the form of free reports or tapes or whatever... they could create a package around their $35 stuff... and charge up to $399 for it.

But they never would have discovered this interesting tidbit... without testing. The lack of resistance to higher prices (when you’ve got something of honest value) is one of the biggest secrets to multiplying your wealth, and hardly anyone figures it out.

Because they’re too lazy to test.

But it’s really easy to test on the Web. Here are two different ways to monitor results:

Web Test #1: If you’re getting a high volume of traffic to your site, you can actually test in "real time". Have your geek standing by (or learn how to use FrontPage software and do it yourself) and change the sales copy on your site while you’re monitoring results.

This is an amazing opportunity for marketers. In direct mail, you have to wait until the mail arrives and the orders come in. That can take several days or weeks, even with first-class mail.

With magazine ads you gotta wait months for total results... and there’s a multi-month lag between placing the ad and having it run.

But online, testing results are nearly instantaneous. For impatient folks like me, that’s a huge bonus. No sitting around twiddling your thumbs. You can launch, test and refine a new campaign every 60 minutes, if you like.

     Amazing.

Web Test #2: This one is much more primitive... and I believe I officially invented it.

In fact, I am officially taking credit for it, as of today. Let’s call it "John Carlton’s Plodding Dinosaur Test". Cuz that’s what I am. I love to solve problems with basic, easy caveman tactics.

It’s very simple. When you want to test your pitch, or anything in it... just get another URL.

There are no rules against "knocking yourself off", you know. If, for example, you are currently hosting the site teachyourcattomambo.com, and your want to test price, or the "voice" in your copy, or the look of your site, or anything else... go to www.register.com or www.godaddy.com (or any of the other joints that register site names)... and get the alternative URL teachyourcattotango.com. Then open another account with whatever search engine you’re buying terms from, and go after the same market segment.

And test away to your heart’s content. Not very elegant, but it works.

But we’re not done yet. Now I want to reveal the big damn secret of quadrupling your profits from any online venture... that is STILL ignored by 99% of all Internet businesses. So listen up.

The simplest way to add zeroes to your bottom line profits online... is to start using direct mail.

Wow. I can hear tech-heads exploding all over the world.

But it’s true. ALL of the savvy marketers I know who are Web-based... have also started incorporating the ancient art of sending real, live letters to their lists.

They do this because it works like crazy.

Other marketers I’ve talked to dispute the idea that direct mail could ever work for "their" lists. In each case I’ve seen, they sent out lousy direct mail letters, got lousy results, and considered the issue dead.

So here’s the caveat: You still have to mail good sales letters.

Which leads us right into our final tip today. A psychological tactic, stolen from street-wise salesman who can sell ice to Eskimos - you must have on your website, autoresponders (or direct mail letters) to get the huge results you crave.

Street-savvy hucksters know that no con will work on an honest man. You need greed in the mix. In those 3-card Monte or shell games (which shell is the pea under?), the hustler always allows the mark to win at first. Then the bet doubles. The mark, thinking this is the easiest money he’s ever made, agrees.

And suddenly that pea does magic acts. By the time the mark realizes he’s being taken, he’s lost a bundle.

For the rest of us, it’s a reminder of the importance of appealing to the inherent greed in all humans. Many marketers put their customers on a pedestal, and refuse to get into the "gutter" with their competition offering blatant bargains.

Big mistake. I love to do the "fire sale" ads, where some slight damage or mislabeling or tiny flaw has forced us to offer everything at dirt-cheap bargain prices. There are businesses all over the country who earn so much in their liquidation "going out of business" sales that they not only stay in business... but they routinely try to go back out of business so they can have that liquidation sale again.

A furniture dealer I know sold so many couches with slight rain damage, that he punched a hole in the warehouse roof to keep the leaks coming.

People like to get something for nothing, or at least get a better deal than everyone else got. It gives them a story to tell their friends. Makes them feel good about their prowess at finding bargains. And - most importantly - gives them "permission" to spend money on something they might otherwise put off buying (or not buy at all).

     That’s it for today.

Write a Keyword-Rich Article to Increase Site Traffic

How To Get $750 For A Five Dollar Item On EBay
Manifesting Your Dreams And Desires

Want to increase traffic, build credibility, improve your search engine rankings and get people talking about your business--at no cost? Then open up your word processor, and start writing. By determining your best search keywords, writing an article that includes those keywords and getting it distributed online, you'll be putting yourself on the radar of people looking for what you provide.

Step 1: Set up your site for maximum "searchability."
Your site has to feature the keywords your potential customers use to search for your product if you want them to find you. To determine your keywords, type a word or term you think people in your market might search for into Yahoo! Search Marketing's Keyword Selector Tool to find out how many people searched for that particular term over the past month. It'll also show you a list of related words and phrases and how often they were searched over the last month, too.

Once you’ve generated a list of useful keyword ideas, you can do some more serious research. Wordtracker goes into more depth to show you not only what people are searching for online but also how many other sites are competing for the same audience. You're looking for search terms that are popular but don't have too many sites competing for them. Wordtracker is a paid service, but you can sign up for a day for less than $8 and for a week for less than $27.

Now that you have some great keywords for your market, find as many places as you can to plug them into your site. Use them in your title tags, source code, page copy, headers and subheads, and your opt-in.

Step 2: Create a keyword-rich article.
Write a keyword-rich article that relates to what you sell, then give it away to other sites--for free. Believe it or not, this is one of the best ways to drive a steady stream of eager customers to your site.

Why does it work? Well, people basically come online for one of two reasons: to check their e-mail or to look for information. Sure, some of them end up making purchases, but this isn't generally the reason they log on. They want the answer to a question or the solution to a problem--and you can provide that in a short article.

Make sure that each article you write contains rare, valuable or hard-to-find information. Not only will this increase the chances that other site owners or managers will post your article, it'll also increase the number of visitors who click through to your site after reading it.

For example, if you have a site that sells used golf equipment, you could write an article about three things to look for in a good, pre-owned putter. Or if you sell an e-book about setting up your own home computer network, why not write an article about common problems people have in setting up a wireless router?

Look for article ideas in the questions people ask you all the time or in the things you often see people doing wrong. Share hot new tips on how to use the products you sell, or talk about trends you've spotted in your industry. Your quick piece should:

  • Be no longer than 400 words (not even a whole page in Microsoft Word)
  • Contain a relevant keyword in the first 90 characters
  • Contain the keyword in the first and last paragraphs
  • Have a short, credibility-building bio with a link to your site at the end. For instance, "Joe Smith is a recognized authority on the subject of widgets. His site, www.JoesWidgets.com, provides a wealth of informative articles and resources on everything you'll ever need to know about widgets."

Step 3: Get your content headed everywhere on the web.
Once you've taken the time to write one or two articles, head to one of these top online content distribution sites. Upload your keyword-rich content to:

These sites carry hundreds (some carry thousands) of articles on a range of topics. If someone's looking for content for their site, they can download or copy an article from the distribution site without paying a dime to use it. They can't change the text of the article, and they must publish it with the author's name and information intact.

Now people plugging your keywords into search engines will be directed to your content at these highly ranked sites, and site owners looking for fresh, search engine-attracting content will download your article--along with your bio and link--and put it up on their pages. And once visitors see that you know what you're talking about, they'll click on the link in your bio and head straight to your site.

Some content distribution sites also offer "send to a friend" links next to articles posted on their sites, so make sure you're uploading your articles to sites with this kind of capability. Every time someone enjoys your article enough to pass it on, your audience grows. And since people don't forward bad content to their friends, they're basically recommending you as a credible source just by passing it on.

The best thing about this strategy is these visitors are quality, targeted traffic--they actually want what you're selling because you're meeting a need or giving them help with the problem they came online to solve.

What "The Secret" Means to Solo Entrepreneurs

How To Make Money Selling Designer Barcodes
The Force that Controls You!

Unless you've been living in a cave for the past few months, you've likely heard about the best-selling book, The Secret, and how it offers guidance and personal narratives about creating the life you want. The essential lesson of the book is how individuals attract (and create) the life they want through their thoughts, attitudes, and emotions. (The book's message is both more complex and subtle than this, but that's the telegraphic version of its theme.)

Whether you accept the full metaphysical premise of the project or not, the lessons of The Secret resonate with knowledge that successful entrepreneurs have understood for decades. So, with a tip of the hat to the creators of The Secret, here are seven principles designed to guide you in your solo business. Many are aligned with those presented by the creators of The Secret -- and all are based on my experience of working solo for more than two decades.

#1: Intention rules all.
Successful solo entrepreneurs understand that singleness of purpose is a potent force. There's no room for wishy-washy, "Oh, I'm thinking about having a successful practice," or "It would be really nice to increase my sales this year." Put a stake in the ground and commit. Recall the Goethe quote: "Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it."

#2. Clarity is crucial.
Be specific in your targets. If there's no metric associated with a goal, you can never know your progress. Place specific parameters on what you want to achieve -- number of clients, revenue goals, time frame, percent increase over past performance -- and you'll significantly increase your chances for business success.

Similarly, be clear on what your company will and will not do. Avoid distractions from your central business focus unless you are certain they can generate a direct positive impact on your core competencies. When business challenges arise, it's easy to get tempted by unrelated business opportunities.

#3. Seek the joy.
Chase passion, not profits. If you build your company around your interests, it will sustain you during the inevitable tough times. Also, you'll be a natural salesperson for your products or services, since you believe in them so deeply. Chasing pure financial gain will only sustain you for so long; there must be deeper significance to your work for it to be personally and professionally satisfying. Build on your unique competencies to create a company that generates both money and meaning.

#4. Magnetize your connections.
Like attracts like. Be the type of person you want to associate with, the type of company you would like as a partner. If you're surrounded by negativity, look inside first and recognize its likely source. Successful soloists seek partners and clients who are positive achievers, individuals who are secure in their self-knowledge and in what they can contribute to the world. By focusing on the qualities of ideal clients and partners, you attract positive results in your business.

#5. Take action.
Merely thinking about having a successful company is not enough. Yes, positive mental focus and clarity are crucial, but you must also act. When your intuition gives you a nudge, move. When you sense the opportunity, step forward and seize it. Business success is guided by mental force, but it takes place in the physical realm.

#6. Expect the best.
Automotive entrepreneur Henry Ford stated, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." Fear and self-doubt erode self-confidence, which is the currency of successful self-employment. Expect great things from yourself and your company, and put forth the effort to build the professional foundation to support your aims. Clients and customers want to do business with companies that are best-in-class. Industry leaders never have second-class expectations of their performance, and they work hard to ensure they deliver first-class results.

#7. Multiply the gratitude.
Give thanks for all that you have, for no matter what your situation, there is much to be grateful for. By focusing on your abundance, you attract more of the same. Appreciation given to customers, clients, partners, vendors, and other business associates strengthens those important ties. Gratitude also lightens your spirit during challenging times, and keeps setbacks in perspective. It allows you to celebrate every day of working solo.

These principles create the foundation for a successful solo business -- and offer an important set of signposts on your journey of self-employment.

Want to Close the Deal? Try Chatting with Customers Online

How to make money without really trying
It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle - make the change.

A weekly look at the latest products and services designed to help you run a better business.

E-commerce businesses, like their brick-and-mortar counterparts, face the challenge of converting browsers into buyers. But because the Web does not allow for face-to-face interaction, it has historically been much harder for an e-retailer to offer the same level of service that customers can find when they walk into a store.

A new Web-based service, ZaZaCHAT, allows e-retailers to provide live help to website visitors via online chat. The tool lets customer-service representatives communicate directly with customers, answering questions about products or making recommendations.

The service also provides website owners with tools to monitor their traffic and examine the demographics of their visitors in real time. When customers visit a site, ZaZaCHAT gives the retailer their location, IP, host name, and the URL of the site from which they were referred.

A beta-version of ZaZaCHAT is available for free. Once the product is out of beta, a limited version will be offered for free, while a PRO version will cost $24.99 per month per operator.

Online Retail Made Easy

For entrepreneurs who need help developing an e-commerce website, Verio recently released a new version of ShopSite, its Web-based shopping-cart tool.

ShopSite 8.1 enables retailers to quickly prepare their websites to complete transactions with customers using multiple payment-processing services such as PayPal, Authorize.Net, and WorldPay. Because ShopSite is compatible with Google Checkout, retailers can also accept credit-card payments without having to obtain a merchant account. ShopSite 8.1 can easily be configured according to the Payment Card Industry Security Practices guidelines, which ensures credit card and other information is kept safe.

The software also provides real-time FedEx shipping quotes and makes it easy for retailers to list the merchandise in their Shopsite store on eBay.

A basic version of ShopSite 8.1 comes preinstalled with Verio's Hosting2000 and Windows eStorefront hosting plans or can be added to other Verio hosting plans for $9 per month.

Track Your Sales Force

If one of your New Year's resolutions is to improve the level of service your staff provides, you might want to look into BlueService, a software package which helps businesses track, manage, and schedule their service teams and expenses.

BlueService, made by BlueFolder, a Colorado Springs, Colo.-based software firm, lets managers view all employees' schedules at the same time and notify their team of new or changed appointments via text messages on their mobile phones. The software package lets users track and prioritize appointments, expenses, comments, and history for all service requests.

BlueService, also provides a customizable customer and contact database. Information about labor and other service expenses can be easily exported from BlueService to the accounting software QuickBooks.

In addition, the software lets a business create a customer portal, which allows customers to submit requests, receive e-mail confirmation, or check the status of their request directly from the business' website.

Monthly fees vary based on the number of users and features needed, but no annual contract is required. BlueFolder is waiving setup fees through the end of the year.

How To Make $40,000 A Year Selling Tumbleweed Online

The Biggest Secret To Successful Copywriting There Is
Tips And Secrets In Diets

http://www.prairietumbleweedfarm.com/

The lowly tumbleweed is a nuisance to most inhabitants of Western Kansas. The Russian thistle bushes are everywhere. They clog drainage ditches, pile up against fencerows, and have even been known to cause traffic accidents.

But the weed is blowing only good fortune to Linda Katz of Garden City, Kan., who is proving that you really can sell almost anything on the Internet. You see, this former real estate agent, who’s married to a roofer, sells tumbleweeds over the Web.

“It all started as a joke,”says Katz, 49. She asked her son to build her a family Web page so she could communicate with friends and give it the tongue-in-cheek name Prairie Tumbleweed Farm. Never mind that she didn’t even live on a farm, but in a subdivision. Nevermind that you can’t cultivate tumbleweed, which spreads its seed as it tumbles in the wind. For authenticity’s sake, Katz added a price list ($35 for a big weed, $25 for a midsize one, $20 for the small economy model).

Remember, Katz wasn’t looking for business, but it found her all the same, thanks to the power of Web search engines.

Orders started to pour in from all the places where people love Hollywood Westerns: Alaska, Austria, Britain, Hong Kong, India.

Japanese customers proved so eager that she has added a section to her Web site in Japanese. Movie and TV production companies in Britain, Finland, and the U.S. have ordered tumbleweed for props, too, including a $1,000 order for the children’s show Barney & Friends. A scientist from New Mexico wanted tumbleweed for research purposes.

Many of Katz’s newfound customers use tumbleweed to decorate their homes, even in lieu of the traditional Christmas tree.

During Katz’s first two months on the Web, the site logged 2,000 visitors. By mid-January, the number had grown to more than 56,000. Katz says she’s making about 30 tumbleweed sales a week, which suggests revenues of about $40,000 a year.

That may not sound like much, but neither are her costs. She fills orders by grazing Kansas fence lines for tumbleweed and buys her mailing boxes in bulk lots. For labor, Katz uses her five nieces and nephews to help collect the stuff, and she gives them a share of the profits.

“Isn’t the Internet a wonderful thing?” asks Katz.

MomsWINS - Awesome Home Business For Women

Low-Budget High-Impact Marketing Plan
Quick Diet's Results

When MomsWIN started five years ago I was just 21 years old. My family grew from two to five youthful bundles of energy called children and my income exploded exponentially. The crown jewels in my business are Addison, Ashton, Avery, Aiden and Amara. Starting at 21 without experience would seem to be a recipe for failure. Hopefully, this helps you to understand why we say not having traditional markers to set our course was a blessing. It should also demonstrate that you to can set a successful course by breaking the traditional rules.

At the time we started, they say the personal computer was 20 years old if you agree the IBM 5150 launch date set that mark. MSN was selling a one ad only for 24 hours on their home page for $20,000. Today that ad is $500,000 for the same 24 hours, according to the USA Today August 2, 2006. Most experts say technology is advancing at a rate that exceeds 100% in that same 5 year period. That brings me to The Adventure Continues. The only constant in business at today's pace is change. Who moved my cheese? LOL

We are refitting the ship to capitalize on new opportunities, emerging trends and tackle the challenges of today's new landscape. It's not question of adapting or changing to meet the market demands - its survival. When it's us against the world, the world is a prohibitive favorite to win. So we all have to refit our ships to continue the adventure. It's not optional. If your partner, mentor or coach is telling you there's only one way to be successful or you will only succeed face to face or leads don't work, maybe it's time to look for a new coach.

You simply can't say there's only one way to network or succeed in a home based business. That's so yesterday and dangerous in that it bets against the world and almost every major trend not only in the home based business industry but business in general. In fact the best model is a multi-faceted approach that ties in to major trends. Remember a few years ago when brick and mortar retailers said the internet wasn't a threat? Virtually every one has long since eaten those words while rushing to learn how to capture their place on the tsunami wave called the Internet. Learning how to utilize technology, the Internet and expand your horizons beyond yesterday's business model will be crucial in the next five years.

How To Become A Super Affiliate And What Is It Anyway?

Bob Parsons' Rules Of Success
About Good Improvements

Over the last few days I have been getting pounded by IM’s and emails from AM’s (affiliate managers) and brass from networks, most of whom I’ve never even heard of. Why? God only knows. I think someone dropped my name and email info in an atricle or post somewhere, but I have yet to find it and have them remove it. The reason they are after me? Not because of my forum or blog, but because I am labeled as a super affiliate. But what is a super affiliate really? And why is this label being thrown around more and more than ever before? Because it’s the spot that every affiliate wants to be in, and that every ad network wants to attract into it’s network.

Let’s just go over really quickly what used to make someone a super affiliate marketer, and what currently makes someone a super affiliate marketer. Years ago, super affiliates were the guys who never posted on forums, never sold any ebooks or products, never really spoke to anyone outside of their inner circles, never had a blog, never let anyone know who they were either. Suddenly, in the last year or less, there are like a million of them popping out and coming out of the woodwork claiming to be a super affiliate, or selling some piece of crap ebook to gullible webmasters on how to learn how to be one for $97, or just bragging about giant checks. Where the hell did these people come from, and since when are they really super affiliates?!

I’ll let you in on a little secret. You cannot LEARN how to be a super affiliate from an ebook or a forum or even a blog. It’s not something you can read in a book or learn from by watching TV or even attending an expensive seminar. It’s something that you can only become by doing a shitload of trial and error, over and over and over again. It’s like comparing this to being a hedge fund manager or some hot shot lawyer. Do you think they learned it from a few sources? Nope! They may have learned some stuff, but the reason they are at the level they are at right now is because it came from this one magical word, with no shortcuts or quick secret routes to, called…. EXPERIENCE. It’s not something you can learn in school, seminars, books, videos, or from friends. You can only gain it by actually trying it, and being successful, but also failing and learning from your mistakes! So why the hell are people still buying these scam artist ebooks?! I guess the greed, naive, and just plain lazy factors are things that they can’t get over.

Anyhow, back to the topic…

So a year ago, there were a very few bunch of people that were called super affiliates. But now there are tons of them. My theory behind this is pretty simple. Times change. That’s all there is to it. A year ago, is about the time when the ringtone boom started. So now you have alllllll of these guys spamming the crap out of social networks, using PPC, SEO, adware, whatever they can to make bank. And by the old and outdated standards, yes, they are considered super affiliates. The old standard was if you make at least $25k a month in affiliate revenues, then you’re considered a super affiliate. I don’t think that’s true at all anymore. Because we are an internet industry, things change and move pretty damn fast, and so should the minimum requirements or earning platforms for affiliates.

What do Darren Rowse (problogger.net), John Chow (johnchow.com), Lee Dodd (leedodd.com), Aaron Wall (seobook.com), Rosalind Gardner (superaffiliatehandjob.com), Joel Comm (whocares.com), or any of those losers giving the $10k seminars and selling those $97 “tell all” piece of crap ebooks have in common?

THEY ARE NOT SUPER AFFILIATES!!

They may all do well in their own right, not bashing most of them, but they are by no means super affiliates. I consider myself friends with some of them, and I’m not trying to be a prick here, and certainly not discrediting some of them (although some of the others should be), all I’m saying and pointing out is that their monthly and annual income levels are nowhere near what super affiliates are doing, not to mention very few of them actually do any real affiliate marketing. I’m sure I can make the list larger, but I just wanted to point out a few of the more popular ones that people always make references to.

A super affiliate 2.0 should be the following:

  • Part of the 1% of all legitimate affiliate marketers (ebooks don’t count!)
  • Monthly affiliate marketing revenues should be no less than $250k a month (revenue, not profit)
  • Annual profits should be no less than $1 million based on your total affiliate marketing revenues
  • You must be hitting the minimums for at least 1.5 years consecutively (to make sure it isn’t a fluke)

With those rules in place, that should cut down all of these bullshit claims by people dubbing themselves as super affiliates. Hell, with my retirement from affiliate marketing, I don’t even meet those standards anymore! But luckily I did, twice, once in adult, and another for 3 years (2003-2006). /end self plug.

So to all of you network reps, AM’s, and fake super affiliates, time to work harder, because finding people that hit the above criteria are pretty tough to find. There are under 1,000 of them in the world. You won’t find them actively posting on forums or blogs (because they have work to do!), you won’t be able to bribe them with higher payouts (they probably get that anyhow), and IM’ing and emailing them because you heard their name mentioned is a really dumb way to present yourself. Treat these people like they are CEO’s of major companies. Would you IM Bill Gates and say “hey, I heard your name from so and so, and they told me you are BIG!”.. only if you want to be blocked or laughed at. No, you approach them with respect, and don’t try to lie to them or give them the run of the mill ad network sales pitch of “well, we have the highest payouts and best converting offers” because EVERY network advertises that, and I for one am sick of seeing and hearing it. Generic pitches don’t work! Just be respectful, and honest, because by earning their respect for you, just getting 2 or 3 of these guys on board your network will make you more than all of your other affiliates combined on average!

To all of you self proclaimed super affiliates… Grow up. Stop lying to yourself, and get busy, instead of trying to trick everyone into liking you because of how much or how little you earn. Flaunting and bragging can get you only so far with the type of people you probably don’t want or need to impress. Want to impress someone and keep them reading your blog? Stop pretending to know what you’re talking about, trying to sell them shit, and start doing it on your own and reach that super affiliate status! It’s not THAT hard. Yeah, it takes work, but hell, everything does! And you also have to play the volume game and scale the hell out of your operations. Not to mention you can’t just depend on one single market or niche or even traffic source. Diversifying is your friend!

/end rant

So the moral of the story really is that ANYONE really can become a super affiliate. Sure it can be intimidating, but then again, what isn’t when it deals with being successful. I’ve said this loads of times.. if you find something that works really well, keep it to yourself or inner circle of friends, and play the volume game by scaling the crap out of it! You’ll never be BIG if you don’t take chances or gamble a bit. Make sure you do all of your trial and error, and your market research with things on a small or medium level too. You don’t want to screw something up by growing too quickly either. This whole thing takes time, and don’t be a lazy idiot and say you don’t have time or patience, because there are people sitting on death row right now with more time and patience and some optimism of being free than most affiliates have with making lots of money some day. Also, please stop buying these stupid ebooks on how to be the next millionaire on your block. They are a waste of money, and I promise you they won’t teach you anything that you can’t learn for free on a forum.

That’s it from me. Another long whinded post. But seriously. Instead of saying you agree or disagree, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Nothing will work out itself. So set your goals to a normal level, read, practice, read, practice, read, practice.. and when you’ve worked out YOUR own strategy, write it down, keep it to yourself, and add some volume and take some chances with it. If you fail, so what, we all do, just try again and this time you’ll have learned from your mistakes. Trust me, I make a ton of mistakes, sometimes pretty costly, but that only makes me want to try harder to get it right, and it should too for you!
